The Laboratory of Engineering of Algorithms and Neural Networks (LEARN) is a research laboratory at PUC-Rio, affiliated with its Computer Science Department. It works in the construction and implementation of efficient algorithms for advanced applications. Among the applications developed are Multi-agent Systems with Learning; Supervisory System for Pipeline Networks; and, Transportation Planners in Polyducts. More recently, Information Extractors for the Web are being developed, with the intense use of Machine Learning. LEARN’s accumulated experience allowed the development of two frameworks for building systems. With the first one, LearnAgents was created, a multi-agent system that won third place in the “Trading Agent Competition 2004”. The second framework is for semi-supervised and active learning. With this, extractors for text mining are generated today in use by important digital media companies.

LEARN was founded by Prof. Ruy Milindiu and is headed by Prof. Sérgio Colcher.
