The Lab

The Algorithm Engineering and Machine Learning Laboratory (LEARN) is part of the Computer Science Department at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), in Brazil. LEARN expertise is on the design and implementation of efficient algorithms for advanced applications.

Our application focus is on

• Computational Linguistics
• and Computational Finance.

Among the applications developed at LEARN we have: Natural Language Processors, Automatic Traders, Pipeline Transportation Planners and Pipeline Network Supervisory System. Recently, we have been developing Machine Learning based Web Information Extractors. The know-how gathered at LEARN enabled the development of some advanced Machine Learning frameworks. The first one is the kernel of the LearnAgent system, that has been ranked as the third best competitor on the Trading Agent Competition 2004. There is also another framework for active and semi-supervised learning. This one generates text mining applications which are being used by important digital media companies.
